PLANS FOR ICONIC BUTTERFLY BUILDING CONSENTED
The Butterfly in Portsoken Street, a new iconic commercial office scheme designed by SPPARC Architecture, has received planning consent from the Corporation of London Planning Committee. ‘The Butterfly’, which will see the redevelopment of the existing Lloyds Chambers in the City of London, will further contribute to the ongoing transformation of the area between Tower Hill and Aldgate.
The development will replace the Lloyds Chambers building with over 400,000 sq. ft. of net office and retail space. The building’s unique “butterfly” shape will deliver more than double the existing floor space whilst maintaining the general height of the current building. Terraces on all floors and extensive roof gardens will expose the extraordinary 360 degree views of the City, the Thames, the Tower and Tower Bridge.
The plans will also enhance the landscaping and public realm in the area surrounding the site, by seeking to upgrade and replace the pavements on Portsoken Street and Goodmans Yards. Almost 35,000 sq. ft. of retail and leisure space will be introduced, helping to create a vibrant scene enlivening both the building and the surrounding neighbourhood.
Trevor Morriss Principal of SPPARC said: ‘Recongising the sensitivities of the site, SPPARC are thrilled that such a bold design has been so positively received by the City of London. The Butterfly will repair the streetscape onto Portosken Street and Goodmans Yard to provide a positive pedetrain experience whilst providing the office occupiers with the highest standard of accommodation including unique balcony space on each floor. We look forward to the next steps for the redevelopment and to see this exciting project come to life’

“We are thrilled that Southwark Council has granted planning consent for what will be a superb addition to Bankside. The reinvention of the site to provide retail, leisure and office uses around a new network of pedestrian lanes will add a vibrant new dimension to this unique part of London. We’ve worked extensively with local stakeholders as well as Southwark Council to ensure that the proposals attracted strong support, and we are delighted that has been reflected in the unanimous planning decision. We look forward to the next steps for the redevelopment and to see this exciting project come to life.”
